'Avengers: Infinity War' Cast News: Russo Brothers Officially Sign on to Direct Film's Part 1 & 2
Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, will also be directing Avengers: Infinity War -- Part 1 and Part 2.
The two officials closed the deal recently, but apparently, there is still a lot of work to be done before they get started with the new Avengers films.
Captain America: Civil War has not yet begun filming, and they have also agreed to write and direct a film adaptation of Mark Greaney's novel The Grey Man. There have also been rumors that they will be writing a Ghostbusters remake.
Hiring the Russos to direct Avengers shows a shift in Marvel Studios' past relationships with directors.
For most of the past decade, it has been common practice for studios to give directors the right to direct all of the movies in a franchise, once the first one is a blockbuster.
For instance, Michael Bay directed all of the Transformers movies, and Gore Verbinski directed all of the movies in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.
However, most of the sequel films in Marvels Studios have been handed to new directors. Kenneth Branagh, who directed Thor, passed the mantle to Alan Taylor, and Joe Johnston of Captain America has now been replaced by the Russos.
It would appear that Marvel prefers directors who are not used to having more control over productions than showrunners do. Branagh and Johnston were both feature film directors, but Taylor and the Russos have experience directing television shows, and on television, the directors are not completely in control.
Avengers fans have quite a long wait before the third and fourth installments in the series hit theaters, or even begin production, but this information is quite exciting.
