'Avatar 2' Delay News: Sequel's Release Date Pushed Back to 2017
Sorry, 'Avatar' fans! It seems you will have to wait to see the majestic world of Pandora for another year, as the sequel has been pushed back to 2017.
Director James Cameron released a statement on Wednesday confirming that he is writing three 'Avatar' sequels. However, the complexity of his work promises to be so profound that he will need to postpone the first sequel release date. Originally, 'Avatar 2' would make it to theaters in late 2016.
"There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film," Cameron announced. Although he wanted to have the scripts for all three movies completed this month, there was just no way around it. Cameron is leading a team of screenplay writers.
"We're writing three simultaneously," Cameron admitted. "And parallel with that, we're doing all the design." The famous director wanted to make sure that the entire world, its creatures, and all of its elements were real and thorough. By writing the pieces on top of each other, Cameron can ensure that the films are continuous.
Perhaps most importantly, Cameron wanted each film linked to the other, although each sequel will come to a resolution.
The 'Avatar' director certainly knows what he's doing! The first film, released in 2009, became the highest-grossing film in all of American history, and won 3 Academy Awards. It earned almost $2.8 billion.
Cameron plans to continue the series with the same actors and the same environment, shooting in New Zealand.
