'Avatar 2' News & Update, Rumors: Sigourney Weaver Returns As Na'Vi, The New Villain
Sigourney Weaver is set to return to "Avatar 2" despite the death of her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, in the first film. There are reports, however, that she will not reprise her role as Dr. Grace. Instead, she will return as the new main villain.
Rumors have it that Jake Sully and Neytiri will be the new leaders of the tribe of Na'vi, and that it is through their influence that Dr. Grace will be resurrected not as herself but as a reincarnated Na'vi. The reincarnated Na'vi will reportedly go up against the leadership of Jake and fight against the humans who attempt to mine on the Na'vi planet.
Speculations about Weaver's return as Na'vi remain strong despite lack of confirmation from director James Cameron and the rest of the "Avatar" team. Reports claim that production is currently under way and Cameron will spill the beans soon.
The film has been in development for some time now, but it has been delayed due to James Cameron waiting for all the technology necessary for its development. The first "Avatar" film which hit theaters in 2009 had been in development since 1994, and the director had to develop new 3D cameras and motion capture technology necessary in creating the wanted effects.
Earlier this year, Cameron teased at CinemaCon that there would be four instead of three sequels to the "Avatar" film. According to him, "Avatar 2" will hit theaters in 2018, followed by three other sequels in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
