Atlanta Hawks NBA 2015 News: Mike Budenholzer Named Hawks President of Basketball Operations
The Atlanta Hawks promoted 2014-15 NBA Coach of the Year Mike Budenholzer to president of its basketball operations to add to his responsibilities as head coach. The team also moved Wes Wilcox to the general manager post a little over a week after Danny Ferry stepped down from the position.
There has been a lot of movement within the Hawks organization in the aftermath of Ferry's departure. As noted by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, three days after Ferry stepped down, billionaire Tony Ressler became chairman of the board of directors, while former NBA player Grant Hill became vice president of the board of directors.
"From our perspective as new owners, a key part of what we bought into is the leadership and proven success of Coach Bud and Wes heading the club's basketball operations," Ressler and Hill said in a joint statement. "Their collaboration was instrumental in leading our team to its 60-win season this year, and we are excited to have them continue their great work for years to come. We look forward to continuing to support their vision for the team as part of out effort to ensure that the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club is one of the premier franchises in all of sports."
Wilcox served as the team's assistant general manager for the past three seasons, and has been in the league for 14 years.
The reigning NBA Coach of the Year became the first Hawks coach to win Coach of the Month in back-to-back months after winning it in December and January. He steered the team towards putting together the fifth-longest win streak in NBA history this past season when the Hawks strung together 19 straight victories. The team also won their first division championship in 21 years, on their way to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
