Atlanta Hawks NBA 2015 News: Hawks Forward Thabo Sefolosha, NYPD Set Court Date to Resolve April Nightclub Incident
Atlanta Hawks guard Thabo Sefolosha is scheduled to go to trial on Oct. 5 to prove his innocence in a case stemming from an April 8 incident outside a New York nightclub, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
As noted by the report, prosecutors dropped all charges against Sefolosha's former teammate Pero Antic, who was with him during the incident, in a Wednesday morning hearing in Manhattan. The Swiss national, though, was offered only a conditional dismissal, which Sefolosha turned down in favor of going to trial to seek full exoneration.
Sefolosha was charged with one count of disorderly conduct and one count of resisting arrest. The incident resulted in a season-ending broken leg for Sefolosha - an injury he previously said was caused by the NYPD's use of "excessive force."
Sefolosha, who suffered a broken right fibula and ligament damage, which led to him missing the remainder of the regular season and the entire playoffs said he has yet to be cleared for basketball activities. NBA training camp starts later this month, with the Hawks' season opener scheduled for Oct. 27 against the Detroit Pistons.
"We appreciate the District Attorney's decision to drop the charges [against Antic] and he looks forward to returning to basketball and his family," attorney Alex Spiro, who represents both players, said. "We firmly believe Thabo's case should be dismissed, too. He maintains his complete innocence."
Sefolosha came to the scene in the early hours of April 8 after Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland was stabbed in the abdomen near the nightclub 10AK that the NBA players were in.
As noted by the AJC report, Sefolosha has not yet filed a civil suit in the case, but could still do so. The report also notes that prosecutors have allowed Spiro to hear audio tapes from the internal investigation of the arresting officers by the Civilian Complaint Review Board.
