Atlanta Hawks 2015 News: NBA Team's Starting Five Share Player of the Month Honors

The Atlanta Hawks have carried out a great start for the season; a nearly flawless start in 2015. They became the first team to go 17-0 over the period of one month, and continued to make history by having their entire starting lineup honored as the collective Eastern Conference Player of the Month.

Paul Millsap, Al Horford, Jeff Teague, Kyle Korver, and DeMarre Carroll earned the monthly honors, becoming the first starting unit to earn the distinction.

Dan Devine of Ball Don't Lie points out that during the Hawks' magical January run, their starting five outscored opponents by 72 points over the span of 207 shared minutes for the month, which translates to 19.3 points per 100 possessions.

All five averaged in double figures, with Millsap leading the way norming 18.3 points, while Carroll's 12.3 points brought up the rear. For their part, Horford averaged 17.1 points for the month, Teague 16.6, and Kyle Korver, 13.4, while shooting a blistering 56.7 percent from deep.

Before their loss to the New Orleans Pelicans Monday, the Hawks were riding a season-high 19-game win streak. Perhaps even more impressive than that, they had won 33 of 35 games tracing back to November 26.

They have since gotten back to their winning ways, beating the Washington Wizards Wednesday.

While this was the first time the league has given Player of the Month honors to an entire starting lineup, the NBA have previously awarded the honors to teammates.

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade shared the honors back in December of 2010; the Dallas Mavericks trio of Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, and Michael Finley did the same in November of 2002; while in December 2001, Boston Celtics teammates Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker shared the Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors.

The Eastern Conference-leading Hawks are currently at 41-9, a full eight games ahead of second place Toronto Raptors.
