‘Assassin's Creed’ Movie Release Date News: Upcoming Film Set for December 2016 Debut

Twentieth Century Fox has announced a new release date for its upcoming film, 'Assassin's Creed', setting it for a Dec. 21, 2016 theatrical debut.

The film's delay puts it more than a year away from its initial release date on Memorial Day 2015. While Fox did not announce a reason for the new date, it could be due to its lead star 'X-Men' actor Michael Fassbender's busy schedule, or a bid to prevent competition such as the upcoming 'Avatar 2' by director James Cameron.

The upcoming film is based on the fictional action adventure video game series 'Assassin's Creed' by Ubisoft. It will be directed by Justin Kurzel and will be produced by and starred in by Fassbender. Other than that, there is little news on the film's synopsis.

Fox has kept mum on the details of the film, which is not surprising in some ways as there is a lot of material from the franchise's games to choose from, from different characters to settings to timelines. Rumors are saying though that Fox could end up branching into its own story.

Fassbender also mentioned before that they while they wanted to stay faithful to the series, they also wanted to try something different.

"We want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own vision of things that already exist in the game," the actor said.

A new story may not be surprising though, as one of the game series' main points is how modern characters were able to access their ancestors' genetic memories through technology, according to Den of Geek.

Rumor has it that while the film will show sections featuring the present day, its historical sections may be set during the Spanish inquisition against Tomas de Torquemada. Fassbender is said to be playing two roles in the film, a death row inmate during the present day and an assassin during the past.

The plot details are all rumors though, so fans and gamers will still have to wait and see as to what Fox has planned for the film.
