'Assassin's Creed' 2016 Release Date: Ubisoft Confirms No New Mainline Game In 2016 Due To Upcoming Movie ?
In line with Justin Kurzel's upcoming video game-based film "Assassin's Creed," Ubisoft has announced that no new mainline "Assassin's Creed" game will be released this year.
According to Game Spot, the absence of an "Assassin's Creed" game release this year would sadden fans and gamers, but not the production team behind Kurzel's upcoming film of the same name.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot shared his thoughts on the company not release a game this year. In an interview with the publication, Guillemot said that the movie guys were extremely happy that they did not have a new game because they would have the full-year marketing space and they felt that they would be able to do a better job at promoting the film.
Guillemot also praised the film's crew, saying that the cast, including Michael Fassbender, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons, Marion Cotillard; director Kurzel, who was outstanding; and the production partners; gave the film an opportunity to become one of the biggest hits of the year.
In another Game Spot interview, Fassbender revealed "The Matrix" as an inspiration for the film. He said that the idea of DNA memory elevated it from a basic fantasy genre piece because one had something an audience could actually believe in, adding that the journey became so much more elevated, because one was on board in a different way.
Fassbender plays new character Callum Lynch in Kurzel's "Assassin's Creed," which follows the character's memories of his ancestor Aguilar and acquires the skills of a Master Assassin. Aside from Fassbender, the film also stars Cotillard, Irons, Gleeson, Michael Kenneth Williams, Callum Turner, Ariane Labed, Matias Varela, and Brian Gleeson, among others.
With Kurzel at the helm of the film, Bill Collage, Adam Cooper, and Michael Lesslie are on board to pen the screenplay.
Kurzel's "Assassin's Creed" is set to premiere in theaters in the United States on Dec. 21.
