Ashley & Mary-Kate Olsen News: Unpaid Interns Sue The Olsen Twins’ Dualstar Entertainment Group
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, 29, are gearing up to fight a class-action lawsuit that was filed against their company Dualstar Entertainment Group, it was reported in the New York Post.
Forty former and current interns are claiming that the company did not pay them for menial tasks and did not provide an educational environment for them, as required under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
The company is an umbrella company for The Row and Elizabeth and James, the twins' well-known fashion labels.
It is being sued for hiring interns for little or no wages, in an apprentice-style arrangement carried out throughout the fashion industry.
As reported by Page Six, Shahista Lalani, the lead plaintiff, worked as a design intern for The Row in 2012, and for the five months of her employment there, she did "the work of three interns" and was on call "all day, all night."
She claims, among other things, that she worked 50-hours a week and her duties were on par with those of a paid employee, but she was not paid as such.
Despite her grievances with the company, Lalani was quick to defend the characters of the Full House twins. "They're really nice people. They were never mean to anyone. They're business people."
Dualstar's representative Annett Wolf wrote in her statement to USA TODAY, "As an initial matter, Dualstar is an organization that is committed to treating all individuals fairly and in accordance with all applicable laws."
She went on to say, "The allegations in the complaint filed against Dualstar are groundless, and Dualstar will vigorously defend itself against plaintiff's claims in court, not before the media. Dualstar is confident that once the true facts of this case are revealed, the lawsuit will be dismissed in its entirety."
The suit was filed in the Manhattan Supreme Court on and is the latest case involving interns and multi-million dollar companies.
