Apple Watch Security News: 'Activation Lock’ Stops Thieves from Using Stolen Smartwatch with WatchOS 2
Soon Apple Watch, the first wearable device from Apple Inc., will receive stronger security. With the launch of WatchOS 2, Apple will be rolling out a special feature called "Activation Lock" that will prevent thieves from using stolen smartwatches. In fact, iPhone and iPad users are already familiar with this security feature.
IB Times reports that when Apple Watch users enable this security feature, they will be able to prevent anyone else from using the smartwatch, in case it is lost or stolen. While the security feature doesn't stop the Apple Watch from being brought back, it prevents a thief or any unauthorized user from activating the smartwatch with no the Apple ID and password linked to it.
Since the launch of iOS 7 in 2013, Apple has been using the "Activation Lock" with its iPhones and iPads. In fact, iPhone thefts have decreased dramatically following the implementation of this feature. In cities like New York and San Francisco iPhone thefts were down 25 percent and 40 percent respectively in the first year of implementing the security feature.
Soon after the launch of the Apple Watch in April, users were horrified to discover that the security feature was missing from the smartwatch and that it was possible for a thief to reset the smartwatch using only a few taps - in fact, they did not require any pass-code. While this made it easy for potential to reset the watch for resale, it resulted in the removal of all data, counting the payment card data linked to the Apple Pay contact less mobile payment service.
According to the report, the initiative to secure the Apple Watch comes while Apple gets ready to allow developers to store as well as run apps on the smartwatch directly, which may possibly lead to additional data left in its internal storage. Besides the "Activation Lock," WatchOS 2 also introduces a number of innovative features to the Apple Watch, for instance, a nightstand mode, new watch faces as well as transit directions.
