Apple Watch Sales News: Cupertino Tech Titan Sold Roughly 2.8 Million Smartwatches Since April

After the iPhone 6, the Apple Watch has also proved to be a money spinner for the Cupertino-based tech titan. According to a recent report in CNET, the company has already sold close to 2.8 million units of the smartwatch since its launch in April.

Since the Apple Watch, the first wearable device from Apple, went on sale in April, research firm Slice Intelligence has been tracking the number of units sold. According to Latin Times, the research firm told Reuters last week that customers are not only buying the popular new device heavily, but some of them are also purchasing no less than one additional band for the watch.

The data obtained by Slice Intelligence was based off a breakdown of 2 million email receipts of online shoppers in the U.S. As many as 20,000 Apple Watch purchasers from this group were analyzed by the research firm.

In order to run the basic apps on the Apple Watch and receive notifications, the user needs to possess at least an iPhone 5. This wearable device is available in a range of models and can cost as high as $17,000 for the 18-karat gold edition. However, the entry-level Apple Watch Sport comes with a starting price tag of $349.

Thus far, Apple Watch was only available via online ordering, but since Wednesday last, the company allowed customers to reserve the device online and then pickup from select brick-and-mortor stores.

Recently, the tech company announced that the operating system for the Apple Watch will soon get an update. In May, Apple announced a latest version of WatchOS with improvements and it includes apps specifically meant for the Apple Watch. WatchOS is scheduled for a fall release.

According to Slice, 17 percent of Apple Watch buyers also purchased a second band to their purchase. It further stated that the black sport color is the most popular band, while Milanese loop band made of stainless steel and priced at $149 is the second most popular band.
