Apple Watch 2 Rumors: Samsung & LG May Develop OLED Displays for New Apple iWatch

If latest reports are any indication, the display of the next Apple Watch will be relatively thinner and be manufactured by Samsung Electronics. A recent report in a South Korean news outlet, Digital Times, claimed that Samsung is already developing flexible OLED panels for the purported Apple Watch 2.

Quoting the South Korean media outlet, IB Times reports that the new displays will be thinner, making space for a larger battery in upcoming Apple smartwatch edition. However, apart from Samsung, Apple has entrusted the job of manufacturing displays for the supposed Apple Watch 2 to LG Electronics too. Earlier, LG Electronics was the sole supplier of Apple Watch displays.

In the past also the Cupertino-based tech titan used multiple vendors to manufacture different parts for its devices. For instance, Apple engaged Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. for the production of its A-Series chip. Though how large of an order each company received has varied year-to-year.

In addition to a new display, Apple may also include a FaceTime camera on the top bezel of the purported Apple Watch 2 as well as new material choices like platinum. However, the screen resolution as well as the shape of the purported Apple Watch 2 is expected to be unchanged.

As of now, Apple has not made any official announcement regarding a successor to the Apple Watch and, hence, it is unknown when the company will actually release one.

Meanwhile, Apple expanded the availability of its smartwatch to seven more countries on June 26, including Italy, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan. The initiative comes in the wake of the launch of in-store pickups for Apple Watches in the first launch countries, including Japan and the United States.

It is expected that Apple will launch WatchOS 2 sometime later this year. WatchOS 2 is the first major update for its current generation smartwatch. The new software update will come with several features, including a native third-party app support, a nightstand mode and new watch faces.
