Apple Turi Latest News: Strengthens AI Footprint With $200 Million Buyout
Apple reinforced its foray into AI technology buy acquiring Seattle-based Turi for $200 million, according to the recent report.
A statement sent to GeekWire said, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." Turi's founder also did not make a comment about the news.
Turi helps developers create AI apps in order to rationalize data. Among the many uses out of the company's programs are identity fraud detection, customer segmentation, predictive programs and others.
The news about Apple acquiring Turi seems consistent with what CEO Tim Cook said during the earnings conference call last month.
"We have focused our AI efforts on the features that best enhance the customer experience," he said.
"For example, machine learning enables Siri to understand words as well as the intent behind them. That means Siri does a better job understanding and even predicting what you want, then delivering the right responses to requests."
In 2015, Apple also acquired UK-based VocalIQ, which is anticipated to result to massive improvements in the way Siri talks and interacts.
The news of Turi's buyout could also have greater significance to how Apple uses Siri from hereon. During the WWDC event, Cook had discussed why they are allowing third-party developers access to Siri.
He said that it will allow the virtual assistant to be even smarter in preparation for Siri's presence to be available on all the product line. Apple's Siri may then recommend apps, news and songs using all data from the Turi machine learning technology.
