Apple New Global Command Center News: $2 Billion Facility To be Built in Arizona

New reports are claiming that Apple will construct a $2 billion data command center in Mesa, Arizona, revealed through CNBC on Monday. The command center will serve as the host to Apple's data operations around the world, and will hire 150 personnel on a full-time basis. This also means the company will be able to provide between 300 and 500 trade and construction jobs.

The construction will involve remodeling of a facility where GT Advanced Technologies facilities was provided space with. GT was Apple's sapphire glass materials supply partner. GT declared bankruptcy last year, while Apple had acquired the 1.3 square million ft facility leased to GT back in 2013. GTAT's sapphire supply were to be exclusively for Apple's benefit.

In keeping with its green power commitment, Apple's new data command facility will use renewable energy derived sources. Part of the company's project includes construction of new solar collection facilities.

The remodeling of the Arizona facility was an opportunity for both the company and the state. Apple will be able to provide better services to both its mobile and desktop undertakings as its requirements for cloud and data management becomes larger. On the other hand, the remodeling also means better economy and more employment opportunities for the Arizona state.

Apple's existing facilities in Oregon, North Carolina, Bay Area and Reno, Nevada are exclusively running on renewable energy sources. They either buy or build new sources of clean energy which are additive to the grid altogether.

Greenpeace lauded Apple's efforts to power its facilities through renewable energy sources, particularly with the company's project to supply around 14,500 homes with enough solar power.

Apple provided a statement to TechCrunch explaining their outcome of its project and the benefits of the Arizona facility to the environment.

"We're proud to continue investing in the U.S. with a new data center in Arizona, which will serve as a command center for our global networks. This multi-billion dollar project is one of the largest investments we've ever made, and when completed it will add over 600 engineering and construction jobs to the more than one million jobs Apple has already created in the U.S. Like all Apple data centers, it will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, much of which will come from a new local solar form."
