Apple Music Latest News: New Apple Streaming Service Among Most Widely Used Apps in U.S.

Although it is only two months since the launch of Apple Music, the streaming service from the Cupertino-based tech giant has already achieved the distinction of being among the most used apps in the United States.

Citing a report in comScore, IB Times reports that the much talked about music streaming service, which was launched on June 30 as part of Apple's mobile operating system iOS update, soared right onto a list of apps that comprises various largest and most popular apps worldwide, such as Facebook and Google Search. In addition, Apple Music also became the second music app to crack the list in July.

Before the launch of Apple Music, industry observers had predicted that Apple would have several strategic advantages over competitors like Spotify, Rdio and Google Play Music. However, the biggest advantage was its enormous user base. According to latest data released by comScore, till July 2015, Apple controlled 44 percent of the U.S. smartphone market, and by design; all these users would avail the opportunity to try Apple Music for free for three months.

The mixed reviews from the media notwithstanding, Apple Music got off to a decent start. Six weeks after its launch, Apple claimed that 11 million people were using it. In fact, that whopping number put Apple Music in the midst of a crowded bunch of competitors, far behind Spotify's 20 million paying subscribers, but ahead of Rhapsody's 3 million and Tidal's 770,000. Moreover, Apple Music also proved that it is capable of driving large numbers of people to look into a featured release: "Compton: A Soundtrack," launched exclusively on Apple Music. It is already among the most-streamed albums of the year.

Now, it remains to be seen if Apple Music can retain this huge audience of users. Recently, Apple's vice-president of iTunes International, Oliver Schusser, told the Guardian that the company was working hard to improve a number of aspects of the app, both for its existing user base as well as for an Android audience that will get a chance to try Apple Music later this year.
