Apple Car Latest Rumors: Cupertino Tech Titan Geared to Launch iCar in 2020?
New rumors regarding the purported driver-less Apple car have been cropping up on the Internet almost every day. Close on the heels of the news that the Cupertino tech titan is supposedly hiring automotive experts for developing a self-driven car, quoting "people with knowledge of the matter," Bloomberg reports that the company is expecting to commence production of an electric car by 2020.
According to TechRadar, considering the fact that Apple does not have any experience related to automotive issues, Apple is certainly moving at a fast pace. Usually, automakers spend as much as five to seven years to develop a new car, but Apple has shown in the past that it can pressurize its teams to meet difficult deadlines.
There are rumors that about 200 staff of Apple is currently dedicated to the purported car project, which has reportedly been code named "Titan."
With Apple venturing into the electric car market, the company will now have to compete with automobile giants like Tesla and General Motors. Both these companies have set 2017 as deadlines for launching their respective vehicles, which will be moving 200 miles on a single charge. Moreover, it is rumored that the upcoming electric vehicles of both General Motors and Telsa will cost below $40,000 USD.
What is, however, surprising is that despite continuous rumors regarding the purported Apple car, there has been no effect whatsoever on the motoring industry. According to the TechRadar report, Dieter Zetsche, chairman of German automaker Mercedes-Benz, has already dismissed the rumors and described Apple's move to manufacture automobiles as something similar to Mercedes-Benz manufacturing smartphones.
Dan Akerson, a former General Motors CEO, has gone a step ahead and cautioned Apple that it should not underestimate the "low-margin, heavy-manufacturing" feature of the automotive industry.
