Angelina Jolie News: Top Ovarian Cancer Doctors Praise 'Unbroken' Director's Column about Surgery

Two years ago, actress Angelina Jolie wrote a column piece about her decision to have a preventive double mastectomy in The New York Times. Now, results are showing that more women are being more active in making decisions about preventative breast and ovarian cancer surgeries.

Doctors from around the country are heralding the actress and the impact her column has had on many women.

"There was a huge spike in awareness after her original piece," said Dr. Diane Yama, chief of gynecologic oncology for the University of Chicago.

According to The Guardian, "Researchers credited that piece for more than doubling the amount of genetic breast cancer tests in the UK, according to a study published in the journal Breast Cancer Research. Months after her editorial was published, referrals for that type of testing remained double the previous year's figure."

On Tuesday, March 24 of this year, Jolie wrote a follow up column about another decision she had to make, a preventative surgery that removes her ovaries and fallopian tubes. Jolie has had a high risk for ovarian cancer as her mother, grandmother and aunt all passed away from it.

"I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt. I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn't live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren," Jolie said.

The surgery should not be considered for everyone as Jolie and doctors said. Women who are considering the surgery should consult as many doctors as they can to find out what their best options are concerning type of surgery to help prevent various types of ovarian cancers.
