Android N News Update, Release Date Rumors: Will Google Skip Right To Android 7.0? New OS Supports VR Technology

Google has always introduced its updates via smaller rates-the 4.0 Ice Cream had 4.1 Jelly Bean, 4.4 Kitkat, for example-but the news and rumors surrounding Android N alleged that the tech giant will skip several places to call it Android 7.

Tech Radar pointed to a leak by Samsung which described the new update as Android 7 in the source code for the MultiWindow SDK 1.3.1, which it promises the version to be compatible with "Android N(7.0.)"

One of the most exciting features for the Android N, according to the news and rumors, is that it's capable of supporting VR technology.

Ars Technica got first look at the developer version for the Android N and pointed to the Special Access on the Settings where the user can open the VR Helper Services.

"The VR helper services screen will show a list of apps that plug into this API, and users can allow or deny the permission," it said.

However, for now, it's not clear just what the VR Helper Services will do and how Google N will evolve from the current Google Cardboard app featured in some phones.

As to the release date for the Android N, rumors point toward a September or October release.

"The next version of Android will almost certainly drop at Google I/O 2016, which will almost certainly take place at the beginning of June," Android Updater said. "While Google will show off a number of Android N's headline features there, only the Developer Preview of the software will be made available at the time."
