Android 5.1 Lollipop Update New Features: HD Voice Calling, Multiple SIM Features & More

Rumors turned out to be true as Google has officially unveiled the Android Lollipop 5.1 update. The latest software will be rolled out for compatible devices from Tuesday, March 10.

According to Tech Radar, a post in the official Android blog confirmed the news, but it did not specify whether the update will incorporate the expected bug fixes that the Lollipop users actually want the Mountain View, California-based tech titan to offer.

Rather than talking about the anticipated bug fixes, the blog emphasizes on the latest features of the Android 5.1 update and what it offers to the Android users.

The new software is said to be a well-featured Lollipop with a list of new features. First and foremost, the update offers support for multiple SIM cards. As a result, now family members or work colleagues will be able to share phones running on this latest mobile operating system.

Android Lollipop 5.1 update also boosts the security aspect of the smartphones running with this operating system. The new Device Protection feature of the software ensures that the users' device remains locked down until they enter their Google password. This feature also ensures that a factory reset doesn't obliterate all the important information of the user.

NDTV quotes Dave Burke, Google vice-president (Android Platform), saying "This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Motorola Google Nexus 6 and HTC Google Nexus 9."

According to this report, the Android 5.1 Lollipop update also introduces high definition voice calling on the mobile phone. However, this feature will only be available only on compatible handsets running with Android 5.1 devices. Verizon and T-Mobile customers in the United States having compatible handsets such as the Nexus 6 will also finally get support for HD Voice.

Other features of the new software include its ability to connect Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth paired device option directly accessible from Quick Settings.

Immediately after confirming the Android 5.1 update, the Mountain View-based tech giant began pushing Android 5.1 factory images for Nexus devices. The company has already posted factory images for the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2012, and Nexus 10.
