Android 5.1 Lollipop Update New Features 2015: Multi SIM Card, Device Protection, HD Voice Calls
While many consumers are still waiting for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for their phones, Google announced late Monday night that the company is rolling out the first update for the coveted and well-received software on various devices.
Not long ago, Google promised improved stability and performance with the update. Three new features will come as well and they will be for multiple SIM card slots, Device Protection, and high definition (HD) voice for phone calls.
Multiple SIM card slots are nothing new to various European and Asian phone consumers. However, the support for another SIM card or two is something new to the United States. The multiple SIM cards are ideal for those who share a phone with multiple people, who run a business or who want to keep better track of their mobile costs.
Beyond that, Android users have wanted Device Protection for a while now. Apple was ahead of the game, but now the 5.1 Lollipop update will have better security. According to Vice President for Android Platform Dave Burke, Device Protection will enable when a phone is lost or stolen. The device will remain locked until a Google account is signed into. The feature will also work even if the phone is reset to factory settings.
Last but not least, High Definition calls will also be available. Google ensures that HD calling will help users make phone calls with crystal clear sound. Another feature available in the 5.1 Lollipop update is the ability to join Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices directly from Quick Settings.
The Android devices most likely to receive the 5.1 Lollipop update will be a variety of Nexus devices such as the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9. The two US phone carriers to get the update first will probably be with T-Mobile and Verizon.
