Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update for Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini, S3 Mini and S4 Mini
Samsung has rolled out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini, Galaxy S3 Mini and Galaxy S4 Mini. Firmware changes makes the devices eligible to receive the update and the means to get the new Android KitKat version are provided below.
Galaxy S2 Mini
Samsung released Galaxy Mini 2 (model S56500) in March 2012; featuring a 3.27 inch screen display and a single-core snapdragon MSM7227A processor.
This handset is no longer elgible to receive the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update owing to the expiry of the software support and a limited memory (512 MB of RAM). Now, Samsung will be requiring higher RAM to provide Androind 4.4.2 plus TouchWiz UI.
However, the smartphone can be updated employing a custom ROM running Android 4.4 KitKat. While CyanogenMod 11 is the most popular, this firmware does not incorporate any Samsung services of apps. Therefore, root access as well as a custom recovery is needed for its installation.
Galaxy S3 Mini
According to SamMobile, Samsung has validated that apart from the expiry of software support, Galaxy S3 Mini is not entitled to get Android 4.4 update. Quoting an official statement, SamMobile says, "In order to facilitate an effective upgrade on the Google platform, various hardware performances such as the memory, multitasking capabilities and display must meet certain technical expectations."
One method to set Galaxy S3 Mini up with Android 4.4.4 KitKat is by employing SlimROM custom firmware. It does not require any Samsung apps and services, root access, but a custom recovery.
Galaxy S4 Mini
A number of Galaxy S4 users are fortunate to receive Android 4.4.2 KitKat update rolled out by Verizon Wireless together with Galaxy S3 U.S. version.
The new firmware upgrade ushers in some changes including, SMS optional app selector for Google Hangouts, Samsung default messaging app, latest lock screen access like media control with camera shortcut and full alarm default, new Location Settings with itegrated new location menu, and additional emoji icons.
The other new features include re-styled status and navigation bars like simplified icons and translucent UI, and wireless printing support for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for well-matched printers.
SamMobile also reported that currently the dual SIM versions of Galaxy S4 (Samsung Galaxy S4 Duos GT-19192) is the official Android 4.4.2 KitKat (through OTA) update. In addition, Galaxy S4 Mini Black Edition will also be upgraded to Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
