Anderson Silva News: 'The Spider' Suspended One Year, Fined $380,000 for Failed Drug Tests
After postponing multiple times, Anderson Silva finally faced the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a hearing regarding his failed drug tests both prior and after UFC 183 last January. And the results weren't favorable. The mixed martial arts legend was suspended for one year, retroactive to Jan. 31, and fined $380,000.
As noted by fight scribe Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, Silva admitted to taking Oxazepam, a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and acute alcohol withdrawal, as well as Temazepam - another benzodiazepine - a sedative-hypnotic commonly used to treat insomnia.
The former UFC middleweight king said those drugs were prescribed to him by a physician in Brazil, clarifying that he first took the drugs late 2014 after he injured his sciatic nerve. Silva then admitted to taking them again after the UFC 183 weigh-in on Jan. 30, saying he wasn't feeling well after the weigh-ins.
Iole points out that what's bizarre about Silva's defense, is that he admitted to taking a clear liquid substance in a blue vial, which was given to him by a friend from Thailand. According to the 40-year-old, he took it for sexual enhancement purposes.
After Silva's attorney hired Paul Scott, an anti-doping expert, to determine how the anabolic steroid drostanolone appeared in Silva's system, Scott found that the liquid in the blue vial was the one that contained the steroid. Scott was also provided seven different substances, which Silva admitted to taking before the UFC 183 fight.
As Iole notes, the inconsistencies in Silva's defense may have led to the NSAC to handing down the stiff punishment. On his pre-fight questionnaire, he indicated that he was taking no supplements. During the hearing, he admitted to taking seven.
Silva also said that he stopped taking the liquid in the blue vial on Jan. 8. Dr. Daniel Eichner, a commission expert, and executive director of the Sports Medicine Rsearch and Testing Laboratory in Salt Lake City, said drostanolone would be out of the system after a week. Silva also tested positive for drostanolone on Jan. 31.
