Anderson Silva News: 'The Spider' Looks Towards Olympics in Brazil for Taekwondo

Former UFC Middleweight champion and one of the greatest mixed martial artist of all time may have his MMA career put on hold as he faces the matter of failing two drug tests, but that hasn't stopped him from setting his sights on a lofty goal"”participating in the Olympics in 2016.

As reported by MMA Weekly, the Brazilian Taekwondo Confederation posted Sunday that Silva sent the group's president Carlos Fernandes a letter "proposing and putting himself at the disposal to represent the sport," suggesting the possibility of competing in the Taekwondo competition at the coming Olympic Games in Brazil next year.

"Everyone knows that for a high performance athlete, the Olympic Games are the dream of every athlete and so would be no different from me. When I was named the ambassador of the sport by President Carlos Fernandes, the feeling began to get even stronger, and being my country, this Olympic Spirit left me highly motivated. It would be a great pleasure to be part of this golden team, which is run by a serious institution led by President Carlos Fernandes. So, I registered my desire to represent Taekwondo and Brazil at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with all my esteem, strength and honor," Silva wrote.

MMA Weekly notes that the confederation's website said nothing has been determined from Silva's proposal, but that the two were expected to meet personally with Silva this week to discuss Silva's proposal.

The news comes shortly after Silva requested for and was granted a second continuance that postponed his hearing with the Nevada Athletic Commission regarding his two failed drug tests.

Silva tested positive for Drostanolone twice in out-of-competition drug tests. After testing clean on Jan. 19, he tested positive again, this time with two benzodiazepine class drugs (Oxazepam and Temazepam), which were commonly used to treat anxiety-related insomnia.
