Anderson Silva News: MMA Champ's Olympic Dreams Have Been Put to a Stop
Despite facing a pair of failed drug tests that could tarnish the legacy he has worked tirelessly to craft, former UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva made no secret of his desire to represent Brazil in taekwondo when the summer Olympics foes to his homeland next year. But as reported by Cagewriter, that dream is now dead.
"The issue of the Olympics has already been ruled out. Anderson will not participate in the Olympics," Silva's manager Jorge Guimaraes was quoted saying.
After failing two separate drug tests that saw traces of Anabolic steroids, among others, following his comeback fight against Nate Diaz at UFC 183, Silva was suspended by the State of Nevada and will face the commission for his official disciplinary hearing on Aug. 7.
"He is now waiting for the verdict of the athletic commission, which should be coming out soon. We are waiting, let's see if there will be punishment and how long it will be. He has trained. Anderson is a guy who will not stop training. He is keeping active," said Guimaraes.
Recently, Bellator bantamweight Mike Richman was suspended for two years after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, and admitted on a Facebook post to using Anabolic steroids.
Silva tested positive back in Jan. 9 for two Anabolic steroids: Drostanolone and Androstane. After testing clean, he tested positive again for Dorstanolone, along with two benzodiazepine class drugs, Oxazepam and Temazapam, which are normally used to treat anxiety-related insomnia.
Silva has admitted that he hasn't actively participated in taekwondo since he was 17, which, should he have pursued his Olympic dream, would have made his chance of making the national team unlikely.
As noted by Cagewriter, Brazilian taekwondo heavyweight Guilherme Cezario Felix called Silva's propositions to join the Olympic team a "joke" in an April Facebook post.
