Ancient City for Sale in Turkey - Bargylia Available for Purchase for Roughly 8 Million Euros

Bargylia, an ancient Greek city located in Asia Minor near Gulluk Bay on the northern coast of the Bodrum peninsula, Turkey, has officially been put up for sale.

The ancient city, which is a popular holiday spot, was advertised by a real estate agency in one of the country's leading newspapers Hurriyet. "A first degree archaeological site, facing the Bird Heaven lake near the Bogazici village, with full sea and lake view," reads the advertisement in the newspaper.

Archaeologists prefer the government to be the potential buyer of the site, but looking at the cost which is at 22 million Turkish liras which is around eight million euros, the funds fall short not just for the government but individual buyers as well.

Speaking of the sale, a senior member of the Archaeologists Association, Binnur Celebi said, "Unfortunately, due to an insufficient budget, archaeological sites are only expropriated during excavations or urban projects," according to the Greek Reporter.

The advertisement, according the newspaper, claims that the site has not yet been excavated and thus, the buyers can enjoy the original Greek culture and architecture of the place.

The city of Bargylia, which now comes under modern-day Turkey, was founded by Bellerphon, according to the Greek mythology, in honor of his companion Bargylos. The city is located near the resort town of Bodrum.

Despite such a high cost, the agency claims to have many interested buyers, even though it is prohibited according to the Turkish law to construct on first-degree archeological sites.
