Amtrak Train Crash News Update: Train Derailed in Philadelphia Causing 7 Deaths
On May 13th, a tragic train accident took place in Philadelphia, killing seven people and injuring over 100. An Amtrak train, which was carrying over 200 passengers from Washington D.C. to New York City derailed around 9:30 pm.
According to Mayor Michael Nutter, the scene of the train after the crash was a complete disaster. "I have never seen anything like it in my life," he gravely stated.
Some of the passengers on the train remember that they were headed into a turn, when suddenly the train car began to shake.
Seven of the train's cars jumped the track. Six of them were overturned completely, and one split in half. The train's engine also was separated completely from the rest of the train.
Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Commissioner Jesse Wilson echoes the mayor's sentiments, saying, "I've never seen anything so devastating. They're in pretty bad shape. You can see that they're completely, completely derailed from the track. They've been destroyed completely. The aluminum shell has been destroyed and they've been overturned completely."
Currently, it is unknown what exactly caused this terrible accident to take place.
Nutter stated that there is no information as of yet about what speed the train was traveling at, or what else could have happened to cause the derailment.
He also stated that he refuses to make a comment on the situation. For the rest of the week, it is expected that Amtrak service through Philadelphia will be shut down.
Hopefully, those injured in the crash will make a complete recovery.
