American Pharoah News: Stud Fee Could Fetch as High as $200,000
With its recent win at Saturday's Belmont Stakes, American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner in nearly four decades. And while the thoroughbred is not expected to retire until next year, sources say that when he does, his stud fee could go as high as $200,000.
As reported by Yahoo Sports, the plan for American Pharoah is to race in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga, followed by competing in October's Breeders Cup, should he emerge healthy from the past weekend's race.
Once calling it a career, American Pharoah is set to retire to Ashford Stud in Kentucky, where he will start stud duties at the official start of thoroughbred breeding season in February 2016.
Citing sources, Yahoo Sports reports that the haul for the only living Triple Crown winner will "probably be north of $175,000" and could fetch as high as $200,000 per foal. That would make a huge haul for American Pharoah and Coolmore, which has reportedly purchased the horse's stud rights from owner Ahmed Zayat for north of $20 million according to the report.
As noted by Yahoo Sports, despite the high fee Zayat had to shell out, he could see a return on his investment quickly as colts can sire more than 100 foals a year. 100 foals in a year would set his earnings at $17.5 million using the projected $175,000 number.
That number is for the floor projection, and for an unproven sire. To put the possibilities in perspective, Yahoo Sports points out that Tapit, which finished just ninth in the 2004 Kentucky Derby, commands the highest stud fee in North America at $300,000 per foal. This is due to its propensity for producing winners"”450 of them according to BloodHorse.
The projections for American Pharoah's stud fee could rise or fall depending on his foals eventually fare.
