Amazon New OS News: Amazon Launches Fire OS 5 for Developers
Fire OS 5 is coming for all Amazon devices, and it will be running Android Lollipop. Amazon has recently made a developer preview available for download.
This will allow software creators to determine how their apps will perform on a Fire HD 6 or 7 running the upcoming operating system, so that they can pinpoint any issues ahead of the official launch, which will be later this year.
Amazon has also upgraded its App Testing Service on its Developer Portal homepage, in order to let developers know whether their apps are compatible with Fire OS 5.
This allows them to do so without having to go through the trouble of attaining and flashing a new build to their device.
However, for developers who do want to get a new tablet to test with, Amazon is offering a fifty dollar discount on up to two Fire HD tablets.
Amazon's phones, tablets and other Fire devices have always run on the Android operating system.
However, it does not come in the form that is seen on most devices. Amazon's products run on a variant of the Android operating system, called Fire OS.
The current version of this operating system is based on Android 4.4, although this is not really relevant, considering the amount of changes that Amazon makes.
In a statement, Amazon said, "And because Fire OS 5 is based on Android Lollipop, we can make this update while preserving even more compatibility with existing Android apps than ever before. This means that even more of your apps should work on Fire devices with no additional engineering effort."
