Amazon Japan News: Office in Tokyo Raided by Police in Child Abuse Investigation
Japanese Amazon offices in Tokyo were recently raided by the Japanese police, as part of an investigation into the sales of images of child sexual abuse, says the BBC.
The Tokyo headquarters of Amazon and a distribution center in Chiba Prefecture were searched by the police, according to the Japanese agency Kyodo. Amazon Japan is suspected of helping sales of child pornography such as photo books of nude girls under 18 by leaving them on its website despite knowing they had been posted there, according to the news agency.
This is not the first time that the Japanese office of the Amazon has been subject to a police raid. The distribution center in Kanagawa was raided in November last year as part of the same operation.
This investigation has been going on since 2013, when two men were arrested for selling illegal photo books using the online shopping website.
However, the company is fully cooperating with the police in the investigation, in a statement to The New York Times, a representative of Amazon said, "We take this investigation seriously, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities. We don't permit illegal items on our site, and we have systems and processes designed to prevent and remove illegal items from being listed."
Amazon's usage rules "prohibit the sale of any illegal products through the company's website," Amazon Japan said in the statement to Bloomberg.
Japan recently reviewed its laws to ban the possession of child pornography, and makes this operation a high-profile investigation.
