'Amazon Books' News, Update: Amazon Opens More Bookstore Shops?
Just when brick-and-mortar bookshops have suffered from the deluge of digital bookstores, Amazon is stepping into the huge vacuum left behind by shuttered stores.
Now, Amazon bookstores will now include Chicago area, particularly in Lakeview neighborhood. According to the news report from the Los Angeles Times, this would be the fourth store to be opened by Amazon Books.
Back in February, the report added, there were speculations that Amazon is getting bullish on opening brick-and-mortar bookstores all over the country. However, there was no confirmation from the company on this regard.
Nevertheless, the Amazon bookstore launched in Seattle, as well as the initial three more areas seems to give credence to this particular rumor. In fact, LA Times said that in San Diego and Tigard, Oregon are the next in line to host Amazon Books.
One of the more unique features of Amazon bookstores is the total lack of desire to maximize space as they display books side-by-side showing the cover on the front.
This news is really not surprising considering what CEO Jeff Bezo told the shareholders meeting last May that Amazon bookstores will open to more areas across the country.
"We're definitely going to open additional stores, how many we don't know yet," he said. "In these early days, it's all about learning, rather than trying to earn a lot of revenue."
What's surprising is that Amazon is willing to sacrifice its overhead when it decides to open even more bookstores. In 2015, for example, 60% of the total revenues of the company came from its online profits.
