Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation tosses conviction for Amanda Knox and Rafaelle Sollecito after 7 1/2 years for the murder or Meredith Kercher. Knox tells press that she is "tremendously relieved and grateful" for the decsion of the Supreme Court of Cassation in Italy on March 28, 2015.

Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend, Rafaelle Sollecito, have been given a final verdict by the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation acquitting them for the murder of her british roommate, Meredith Kercher, in 2007.

The decision by the highest court in Italy was made after 10 hours of grueling deliberation considering Knox and Sollecito's presence in the victim's room to commit the controversial murder that had the US, Italy and Britain so engrossed for almost eight years.

Should the acquittal have never happened, Knox would have faced 28 ½ years in prison and 25 years for Solecito. Both of them have kept fighting for their innocence despite their separation earlier in the trial. Moreover, the official reason for the decision will be released by the Supreme Court of Cassation after 90 days.

Knox's family has exerted effort to support her with numerous help to prove her innocence from DNA experts, FBI agents and even strangers all over the world.

"I am tremendously relieved and grateful for the decision of the Supreme Court of Italy. The knowledge of my innocence has given me strength in the darkest times of this ordeal. And throughout this ordeal, I have received invaluable support from family, friends and strangers. To them, I say: Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your kindness has sustained me. I only wish that I could thank each and every one of you in person," Knox officially said to the press.

In Rome, Rafaelle Sollecito together with his family was present in the court room hours prior to the decision. He had left afterwards but Sollecito's family members who remained were the first to receive the verdict and rejoiced in the moment.

However, Kercher's mother has told Press Association that she was shocked at the verdict since they have been convicted twice in the previous courts. Kercher's lawyers also expressed their disappointment.

Meredith Kercher and Amanda Knox were roommates in Perugia, a university town in Italy in 2007. Knox and Kercher frequently went with the same group of friends, usually with Italians. This included Kercher's former boyfriend Giacomo Silenzi and also Rudy Guede. Knox and Kercher eventually met Rafaelle Sollecito in a concert in October 2007.

Knox and Sollecito began having a romantic affair and would frequently spend time together. Kercher was alone on November 1, 2007 when she was murdered by an unknown assailant. Knox arrived the next day and reported an apparent burglary in their apartment to the police. They investigated and found Kercher locked in her room half-naked in her own pool of blood.

Knox and Sollecito were tried for being prime suspects of Kercher's murder considering the angle of a "sex game" that the two could have done. Further examinations of the murder site also pointed the DNA of Rudy Guede on a number of items and on the victim's body. Guede had fled to Germany a few days after the murder.
