UFC 2015 Update, News: Aldo’s Coach Speaks on Conflicting Medical Reports
The UFC recently released a statement that UFC featherweight champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib and is still scheduled to fight at UFC 189 on July 11. That gave fans eager to see his title fight with brash Irishman Conor McGregor a huge sigh of relief, but Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com reports that there might be some controversy to the champion's medical report.
Initial reports coming from Brazil said that Aldo suffered a fractured rib during sparring, with the UFC later announcing that it was a bone bruise and that the Brazilian was cleared to fight.
Cruz's report says that according to Nova Uniao head coach Andre Pederneiras, there is a conflict between what Brazilian doctors have found and what American doctors are saying.
"There's a medical report here and an evaluation there. I'm not a doctor to say which one is correct. I know he's injured and this rib injury is painful. He's using anti-inflammatory and we will wait to see if he gets better. The fight is on, and we'll check on him again next week," Pederneiras said.
The coach clarifies that the UFC did not pressure them to take the fight despite the injury, but said their camp will decide to take Aldo out of the fight should he be unable to cut weight properly.
"If he can't do any exercise to cut weight, he won't fight at all," he said.
Adding, "He's forbidden to do anything right now. If you move, the injury won't heal, so he needs to stay to some rest. He's used to pain but is feeling a lot of pain right now."
Pederneiras also said that the champion took issue with his injury being revealed to the media.
"We took him to the hospital and a lot of people saw him there. I told the matchmaker he was injured and under treatment, but it was on the media already. We believe someone in the hospital leaked this information to the media.
The UFC has also announced a contingency plan should Aldo not be fit to fight. They have Chad Mendes and McGregor fighting for the UFC interim featherweight title should Aldo pull out of the fight.
