Academy Awards 2015 News: Academy President Speaks About 'Lack of Diversity' in Oscars

This year's Oscar nominations have faced criticism from hundreds around the globe, claiming that the slate this year are predominantly white. People are tweeting their thoughts, along with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

The Oscars nominations this year were announced last Thursday morning, and many people were quick to notice that all 20 acting nominees were white, saying that the Oscars have not been so white since 1998. People have also noticed that people of color are only awarded nominations when they play roles concerning a maid or a slave.

After the said criticisms emerged, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Cheryl Boone Isaacs said that she wants to push the Academy to be more inclusive and she wants to create a more diverse voting body.

Boone Isaacs shared that the current voting body is comprised of 93% white people and 76% males. She says in an interview with the Associated Press on Friday evening, "In the last two years, we've made greater strides than we ever have in the past toward becoming a more diverse and inclusive organization through admitting new members and more inclusive classes of members."

She also adds that she is personally looking forward to a greater cultural diversity among the nominees in all categories in the next few years. Boone Isaacs also partly blamed Hollywood. According to Boone Isaacs, the film industry also needs to diversify.

She also said to the AP that the Academy is "committed to seeking out diversity of voice and opinion."
