Aaron Hernandez Murder Trial News, Update: Defense Rests after Calling Three Witnesses in One Day
This Monday, testimony in the murder trial of Aaron Hernandez, former New England Patriots player, officially ended. Apparently, the defense called only three witnesses and rested its case in one day.
The judge, Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh, told the jurors that there was no more evidence to be heard and that they would return to court on Tuesday morning to listen to the closing arguments as well as receive further instructions. Shortly after, they will begin their deliberations.
Aaron Hernandez pleaded not guilty in the killing of Odin Lloyd on June 17th, 2013. Lloyd was shot six times at an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, Massachusetts.
At the time of the murder, Lloyd was in a relationship with Hernandez's fiancee's sister. Hernandez, who was a tight end for the Patriots had a $40 million contract with them at the time of the murder as well.
According to The Miami Herald website, "The defense's first witness was a professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, who testified about the effects of the drug PCP, saying it can cause people to become suddenly violent days after using it."
In relation to this statement, in her testimony, Hernandez' cousin stated that she had witnessed the two co-defendants, Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, smoking PCP during the same weekend that the crime took place.
Both of those men also pleaded guilty, and will be tried at a later date. Other witnesses were called as well, in an attempt to connect the crime to the alleged ingestion of the drug by the defendants, with seemingly inconclusive results.
More evidence included Hernandez' DNA which was found on a bullet casing in a trash bin near the scene of the crime.
