Media outlets are reporting about a 3-year-old boy shot who his father and his pregnant mother in a motel in New Mexico, according to NBC News Station KOB.

The incident took place when the child was trying to reach for an iPod and grabbed the gun instead and shot both his parents. The family was staying at the America's Best Value Inn in New Mexico.

Justin Reynolds, the father of the child, said that he and his girlfriend Monique Villescas were getting ready to order pizza when the incident occurred. Speaking on the incident, Reynolds said, "It was like if I was to get up shake your hand and sat back down. That's how fast it happened. All of a sudden we heard a gun go off and the next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding. Then I sat down and realized I was shot too," according to KOB.

Reynolds called 911 immediately and grabbed towels to try stop Villesca's bleeding. He also added that he was relieved that the bullet narrowly missed the child's 2-year-old sister sitting next to the woman.

Albuquerque police said the district attorney's office would decide whether the parents would face negligence charges. The children were taken into care, according to BBC.
