2017 Grammy Awards: Hillary Scott, Kirk Franklin Win Double Awards In Christian, Gospel Categories Respectively; Joey+Rory Win Roots Gospel
Christian contemporary group Hillary Scott & the Scott Family and Gospel artist Kirk Franklin walked away as the big winners at the 2017 Grammy Awards yesterday, taking home both song and album of the year in the Contemporary Christian and Gospel categories, respectively.
Hillary Scott, who is also the co-lead singer in Lady Antebellum, won the category for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song with her hit "Thy Will," while also taking the prize in the Best Contemporary Christian Album category for its accompanying album, Love Remains, both of which feature Hillary Scott & the Scott Family.
Leading up to the awards ceremony, the 30-year old singer tweeted to her followers: "Today is the day. Humbled beyond words to be here with my precious family. Thank you God from whom ALL blessings flow. #grammys2017"
In the Best Gospel Performance/Song category, famed Gospel musician and songwriter Kirk Franklin and singer Tamela Mann won with "God Provides." Franklin also managed to win Best Gospel Album with Losing My Religion, competing with nominations such as Fill This House by Shirley Caesar, and Listen by Tim Bowman Jr.
A seemingly reverent Kirk Franklin shared to his Twitter followers the day after, "Man.. I have so much growing 2 do. So much That needs to change. I'm just grateful God that u won't stop until I become what u want me 2 be."
In the Best Roots Gospel Album category husband-and-wife country music duo Joey+Rory won with their album Hymns, and Rory paid tribute to his late wife who passed away in 2016.
"['Hymns That Are Important To Us'] finally came out a year ago almost exactly, and we sat together in the final days and watched this awards ceremony last year," Rory said (via Us Weekly). "She said, 'If we get nominated, promise me you will come.' I said, 'I will.' And, she said with a smile, 'Remember, if we win, I'll know before you know.' This is to my wife."
