NBA Draft 2015 Highlights News: Karl-Anthony Towns Selected First Overall Pick
The 2015 NBA Draft came with a few surprises, most of which appears to foreshadow things to come.
Karl-Anthony Towns was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the first overall pick. The versatile big man separated himself from the rest of the class with his combination of rim protection, agility, and shooting stroke.
The Los Angeles Lakers shook up the rest of the draft when it selected Ohio State standout D'Angelo Russell with the second overall pick. Going into the draft everyone expected the Lakers to draft Duke big man Jahlil Okafor, but with rumors of a potential DeMarcus Cousins trade, and with LaMarcus Aldridge's camp saying that Los Angeles has climbed up the list of the power forward's preferred destinations, the Lakers took the player, which most experts feel has the most star power in the entire draft.
The Philadelphia 76ers already has a pair of seven footers with Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid, but ultimately felt the polished post game of Okafor was too much to pass up at No. 3.
The New York Knicks made another surprise pick when it drafted 19-year-old Latvian seven footer Kristaps Porzingis much to the chagrin of Knicks fans who trooped to the Barclays Center to witness the draft. Phil Jackson and company are banking on the promise of Porzingis' combination of athleticism and shooting to get the out of being the laughingstock of the league.
The Orlando Magic got the man they've been reported to covet when they drafted Croatian Mario Hezonja at No. 5. The 20-year-old's combination of slashing and three point shooting could prove to be a vital addition to the young core the Magic have already assembled.
The Sacramento Kings have been mired in the Cousins drama, and appeared to have drafted a back up plan when they selected Willie Cauley-Stein. Cauley-Stein is projected as the best defender in the entire class, and could end up being a better fit under George Karl's up-tempo scheme.
The Denver Nuggets took Emmanuel Mudiay at No. 6, which could signal their parting with Ty Lawson. Lawson was seen watching the draft while smoking a hookah, and was heard saying, "I'm going to Sacramento," as soon as Mudiay's name was called.
