2015 ESPY Awards News: The Big List of All Notable Winners
The biggest and brightest stars in sports gathered at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles for the 2015 ESPY awards. Peyton Manning was awarded Best Record Breaking Performance for reaching first place in the NFL's all-time passing touchdown list.
"I certainly think about how grateful I am for all the teammates and coaches that I've played with and played for throughout my career, not only here in Denver -- in Indianapolis and all the people who have helped me along the way," Manning said upon setting the record," Manning was quoted when he set the record.
Curiously, LeBron James was given an ESPY for Best Championship Performance despite his Cleveland Cavaliers falling short against NBA champions Golden State Warriors in the recent NBA Finals.
James was given the nod over racehorse American Pharaoh, among other nominees, for being the first player in NBA Finals history to average at least 35 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a championship series. He also led all players on both teams in points, rebounds and assists.
His counterpart, NBA MVP Steph Curry was awarded the ESPY for Best Male Athlete after leading the Warriors to their first championship in 40 years.
ESPN Stats and Info notes that an NBA player has won Best Male Athlete in each of the last five years after only one NBA player won it in the ESPY's first 18 years.
Curry was only one of three players last season to average at least 20 points and seven assists, with totals 23.8 points and 7.7 per.
Other notable winners include UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey for Best Female Athlete and Fighter of the Year; Odell Beckham Jr.'s incredible catch for Play of the Year; the USWNT for Team of the Year; Lionel Messi for Best International Athlete; and Marcus Mariota for Best Male College Athlete.
