2014 Movies Box Office - Film Lead Role Trends: More Men Star in Top Movies of the Year

There appears to be a growing trend in today's movies for women to be taking a back seat because, the chances of seeing women in leading roles is gradually dwindling. A study carried out by BoxOffice has revealed that in 2014, women led 18% of the year's 50 highest-grossing movies.

For every Jennifer Lawrence in 'The Hunger Games', there's 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' -- all starring white male actors. In regards to that, this pattern is evidently not a new one. Moreover, films with male leads have outplayed films in which the female was prominent.

Statistics show that in 2013, men led 80% of the highest grossing movies released and in the year before that, male actors dominated the box office by 84% and the figures for 2011 was 88%.

However, when it comes to the audience, women account for the box office success - they show up in theaters and fuel box office receipts. It seems last year, three out of five of the highest grossing films had female audiences that were higher than male audiences. This is based on reports by the Motion Picture Association of America.

The movies 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire', 'Despicable Me 2' and 'Monsters University' were the three highest grossing films of 2013 where women were the target audience, while 'Man of Steel' and 'Iron Man 3' were the other two hit films of the year attracted males.
