'19 Kids and Counting' News, Canceled Rumors: Thousands Sign Petition Urging TLC to Dump Duggars
Several thousands of people have recently filed a petition urging TLC to cancel airing '19 Kids and Counting' and discard the Duggars, as the family matriarch has received heavy criticism for her allegedly anti-gay statements.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, over 100,000 people signed a petition on Change.org reacting to Michelle Duggar's plea to the residents of Fayetteville, Ark. Her plea was an attempt to counter an anti-discrimination ordinance that would permit men to use lockers, restrooms, showers, and sleeping areas exclusively meant for use by females.
The petition submitted to TLC read, "Just because someone is transgendered doesn't mean they are a child predator or a rapist." It goes on to add, "The claim that this ordinance would provide predators with access to women's restrooms in order to assault or leer at girls or women are nothing more than fear-mongering and spreading ignorance and hatred."
The petition alleges that the Duggars contributed $10,000 to a movement to revoke the ordinance even after it was passed.
Despite the Duggars' opposition, the ordinance passed, banning all public accommodation and businesses from distinguishing between people on the basis of their gender or sexual orientation.
Earlier, in a robocall, Duggar said, "I don't believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls."
Meanwhile, supporters of the Duggar family have brought about their own petition to substantiate their views. However, less that 4,000 people signed the counter petition that has urged TLC to continue airing the show. The second petition claimed that the show still has a lot of viewership as well as supporters, although not all of them may share the personal views of Duggar.
While TLC has yet to state its stand on the issue, even the Duggar family was not available for comment.
