As Benedict Cumberbatch is set to appear in Marvel's upcoming 2016 film 'Doctor Strange', the actor shared his thoughts on taking on the role, film spoilers, practicing the mystic arts, and reading comic books.

Marvel confirmed Cumberbatch's participation in the Scott Derrickson-helmed film last month and while production is still a long way off, the actor was able to share a few things about his upcoming role as the Sorcerer Supreme during an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

When he was asked about taking on a potentially risky role, the 'Sherlock' actor said it wasn't a risk at all.

"I don't think it's a risk because of Marvel. Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary cosmic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It's very different, it's an Astral Plane," he said. He also added that there was a new element of the Marvel universe that will be introduced in the film.

Cumberbatch stated, "I'm really excited about it, about working with Scott whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they're doing."

Doctor Strange is known for practicing the mystic arts and meeting the Ancient One, and when asked about possibly taking the film to the Himalayas, Cumberbatch remained vague.

"You'll have to wait and see," he said, "I'm very excited about that spiritual dimension, obviously." He explained that he meditated a lot, a practice he learned from traveling to India and teaching English to Tibetan Buddhist monks.

Given his participation in a Marvel film, Cumberbatch was asked if he ever read comics and admitted that he didn't read any comics at all.

"I'm so deprived," he joked, but said he was definitely doing his homework, "You can bet your bottom dollar I'm reading them now, avidly."

For now though, the actor is busy working on the fourth season of 'Sherlock' with co-star Martin Freeman, production of which recently started in Bristol.

'Doctor Strange' is directed by Derrickson and is penned by Jon Spaihts. It will follow the story of Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who becomes involved in a horrific car accident. He then discovers the hidden and magical world of alternate dimensions and becomes imbued with mystical superpowers.
