4 Christian Songs That 'Never Forget' the September 11 Attacks; DC Talk, Amy Grant, & More Help America Heal [VIDEOS]
Today marks a somber day in America's history as it is the 14th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Flight 93. From out of people's suffering many artists created songs reflecting their feelings and prayers for what happened, and BREATHEcast has compiled a few of them in hopes of helping in the healing process.
The first song is called "Broken Lungs" by the band Thrice off their Alchemy Index Volume III: Air album. Thrice is lead by former Mars Hill worship leader Dustin Kensrue.
Kensrue's lyrics reflect sadness but also questions much of what happened in the day in a way to suggest the whole story was not there. Regardless of what certain people may think of the vents, he poses a poignant statement, "The trajectory of the modern world springs forward from those events and if we hold a false view of those events, it will be impossible to steer well into the future.
Some of the lyrics include, "Woke up to a brand new skyline/We licked our wounds and mourned the dead...A fire burns beneath Manhattan, still we breathe with broken lungs."
The second song on this list is DC Talk's "Let's Roll." At the time the three members of the group, TobyMac, Kevin Max, and Michael Tait were on hiatus and doing solo projects but reunited to record the song.
The name of the song comes from a phrase used by one of the passengers on board hijacked plane Flight 93 on the phone before losing connection. The passengers on board knew the plane they were on would be used to hit another target for the attack so they banded together to take down the assailants. The last thing he said was, "Are you guys ready? let's roll."
Some lyrics from song include: "Let's roll, let's fight/ (Let's show the world what's right)/ Let's roll, let's fight/ (His Spirit is our light)."
Legendary CCM singer Amy Grant also put out a song about 9/11 called "I Don't Know Why" off 2003 record Simple Things.
While she doesn't directly address anything that happened during that day, her song is more of a reflection and prayer to God for guidance on how to move on.
"So I face the unfamiliar/ And nothing's clear/ Only blinding faith can carry me can carry me from here/ And I don't know why/ I don't know how/ I don't know where/ Baby all I know is love"
Lastly, Michael W. Smith tackled that fateful day with the song "There She Stands" off the album Worship Again.
Smith's song speaks about the American flag standing tall and people risking their lives to ensure the public's safety and freedom.
Lyrics from the song include: "There she flies, clear blue skies / Reminds us with red of those that died / Washed in white by the brave / In their strength, she stands.." and "When evil calls itself a martyr / When all your hopes come crashing down / Someone will pull her from the rubble / There she stands"
