‘The Theory of Everything’ Movie Release Date: Stephen Hawking & Jane Wilde Shows Support for New Movie
Stephen Hawking and his former wife, Jane, showed their support for the upcoming film, 'The Theory of Everything', which tells the story of their romance.
It took filmmakers years to convince Hawking and his former wife, Jane, to approve of the film, but when they did the former husband and wife actively showed their support during the film's production, lending their personal items, such as Hawking's thesis and a medal given to him by the Queen, and visiting the set to meet the cast and crew.
Lisa Bruce, the film's producer, spoke at the Envelope Screening Series that showcased the film. She recounted Hawkings' visit to the set while they filmed a ball scene. The two stayed to watch Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones portraying Stephen and Jane respectively.
"It was quite a lot of pressure for all of us," Bruce said, "But particularly for the actors because there's nothing like having the actual people you're playing standing over there while you're playing them. It was quite intense."
Redmayne, who portrayed Hawking, also talked about his experience meeting the theoretical physicist during an interview via Today.
"I'd spent four, five months researching, and he'd become like idol-like in my mind," Redmayne said, "So when I actually got to meet him I was so nervous that I basically just sort of spewed forth information about him, to him, for about the first 40 minutes."
During the film's screening, Redmayne also shared a story about Stephen Hawkings' "rock star entrance" when Hawking came on set to observe one of the scenes, which happened to include fireworks.
"Stephen arrived with his iconic silhouette - him in his chair, flanked by his nurses - uplit by his computer scene. There was this extraordinary spotlight on him. And then on cue, the fireworks went off. It was the greatest rock star entrance I've seen in my life."
'The Theory of Everything' does not just portray romance, but also showcased Hawking's physical decline due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The film showed the progression of Hawkings' relationship with his first wife and his battle with disease, and how Hawking and his wife struggled.
"The movie is not a biopic of Hawking's life - it's a portrait of a relationship," said director James Marsh. The illness plays a huge part in their relationship and "it's like a bomb goes off in a family - it resonates across all the people that have contact with that family."
'The Theory of Everything' is based on Jane Wilde's memoir 'Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen'. The film is set for release in the U.S on Friday, Nov. 7.
