'Star Trek 3' Release Date: 2016 Premiere Has Trekkie Fans Excited

While 2015 is looking like a good year for movies, 2016 doesn't look too shabby either. With films like 'Angry Birds', 'Warcraft', 'The Mummy' reboot, along with 'Finding Dory', 'Independence Day 2' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales', fans are going to spend a lot of time at the cinema. Another film set for a 2016 release that is already drawing hype is the upcoming 'Star Trek 3'.

The year 2016 marks the 50th Anniversary of the original Sci-Fi TV show, 'Star Trek', by the late Gene Roddenberry. The director of 'Star Trek' reboot and the sequel, J.J Abrams, will not be directing this film since he is very busy with his 'Star Wars: Episode VII' that has been slated for a 2015 release.

Some reports suggest that Joe Cornish will be the best choice to replace Abrams. However, Roberto Orci is directing this film without Alex for the first time.

Alex Kurtzman has escaped penning this movie, as he has 'The Amazing Spider-Man 3' to work on for a 2016 release. Additionally, the 'Sleepy Hollow' TV series has been renewed for its next season with Alex Kurtzman as the show runner and co-creator. With this and other projects, Alex has skipped 'Star Trek 3' entirely.

J.D. Payne, Roberto Orci, and Patrick McKay will be penning this installment as the screenplay collaborators. While the 'Star Trek' series had earth centric plots till date, this time Captain Kirk is said to go out on a five year mission into deep space.
