'Spiderman' New Actor News: Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Liam James, Timothee Chalamet & Tom Holland - Final Five?

The Wrap reports that Sony and Marvel have shortlisted the actors they want to portray the character of Peter Parker, alias Spider-Man, down to just five. While the Collider's Steven Weintraub was the first to let loose rumors regarding the shortlist via Twitter posts, now the official shortlist has been made public.

Christian Today reports that the list posted by the Wrap includes 'The Fault in Our Starts' actor Nat Wolff, 'Hugo' and 'Ender's Game' star Asa Butterfield, Liam James from 'The Killing,' Tom Holland from 'In the Heart of the Sea,' and Timothee Chalamet from 'Interstellar.'

It is interesting to note that all the young actors who have been shortlisted for the role of Spider-Man are within the age range that was desired by Marvel Cinematic Universe producer Kevin Feige. In an interview with the Collider, Feige said that the next manifestation of Spider-Man would portray the character mostly in his high school years.

When Tobey Maguire portrayed a high school Peter Parker, he was just 26 years old. Similarly, Andrew Garfield was 28 years old when he portrayed Parker after Maguire. However, after Peter acquired his super-powers, both film franchises jumped out of the high school setting right away. Nevertheless, Feige's statements are an indication that the new Spider-Man will continue to be in high school, and this is why the producers are looking for a younger cast.

The Wrap further reported that Drew Goddard, who earlier directed 'Cabin in the Woods,' is currently at the forefront to be at the helm of the new Spider-Man film, which, according to rumors, will be titled 'The Spectacular Spider-Man.' Meanwhile, Screen Rant stated that the director was recently spotted in the hotel where the 'Captain America: Civil War' production crew was preparing for filming.

If this is ture, then it suggests that Goddard may do a cameo of the superhero in 'Captain America: Civil War' and would make clear the hurried search for an actor to play the role. In fact, it is possible that Sony and Marvel may use a substitute for the cameo appearance and afterward use the official actor for 'The Spectacular Spider-Man.'
