Rihanna News: Singer Becomes First Musical Artist to Eclipse 100 Million in Digital Sales
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently announced that musical artist Rihanna has surpassed over 100 million Gold and Platinum song certifications, propelling her to number one on RIAA's list of artists with the most Digital Single Awards. The Barbados native also became the first and only artist to surpass the association's 100 million cumulative singles award mark.
"Gold & Platinum is the industry's premier way to celebrate achievement in the marketplace," RIAA chairman and CEO Cary Sherman said in a released statement. "We've given awards to artists for nearly 60 years, but it's rare that we have the opportunity to recognize a milestone like the one Rihanna has reached. Congratulations to Rihanna! She has not only surpassed RIAA's 100 million mark, but also is the first artist to do so. It's a historic feat and a testament to an extraordinary career."
Recently, Rihanna claimed 48 million new RIAA Digital Single Certifications, which count download sales and on-demand streams in the United States.
As noted by the RIAA release, apart from Rihanna's 100 million cumulative song mark, her career album awards total 7.5 million sold in the U.S, which include two-time multi-Platinum for 2007's "Good Girl Gone Bad," five platinum albums for 2006's "A Girl Like Me," 2009's "Rated Rm" 2010's "Loud," 2011's "Talk That Talk," 2012's "Unapologetic," and Gold for 2005's "Music of the Sun."
Her recent single "B*tch Better Have My Money" recently went Platinum, and "FourFiveSeconds" is 2x multi-Platinum.
"histoRIH!!!! First and only!!! God is great!!! #RIAA #digitalQueen #RIHmilli," Rihanna wrote in an Instagram post acknowledging the achievement.
As noted by the release, the RIAA created its Gold and Platinum Awards Program in 1958 to honor artists and create a standard for measuring the commercial success of a sound recording. The program trademarked the Gold record and formalized the industry practice of presenting awards to artists for music sales achievements.
