New Animated Spider-Man Film News: Sony Confirms Upcoming Movie, Taps ‘Lego Movie’ Directors

Even as Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting the casting news for the new Spider-Man live-action movie, addressing the CinemaCon attendees in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Sony Pictures has announced that it is already working on an animated version of the superhero story.

According to IB Times, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group Chairman Tom Rothman made the announcement at the conclusion of the slate presentation of Sony Pictures for 2015. The upcoming movie, according to Rothman, will be different from Sony's upcoming live-action Spider-Man film, and will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directors of 'The Lego Movie.'

Addressing the exhibitors at the CinemaCon, Rothman said, "It will be something quite unlike what you have seen before." He said that the studio plans to make a "new, distinctive, animated Spider-Man movie."

Describing the upcoming movie as "awesome,' Rothman said he is thrilled to be working together with Lord and Miller, whom he described as a "genius duo."

Earlier, Sony collaborated with Lord and Miller for the blockbuster 'Lego Movie,' in addition to 'Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs,' the '21 Jump Street' and '22 Jump Street' films. Sony Pictures also issued a press release at the end of the CinemaCon presentation confirming that Lord and Miller will also write and produce the film.

The Spider-Man animated feature is slated to hit the theaters on July 20, 2018, while the forthcoming live-action Spider-Man film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe, which was announced in February, will release on July 28, 2017.
