Marisa Tomei Casting News: Actress Joins Growing Cast of ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

Actress Marisa Tomei is reportedly very busy now, especially after she reportedly signed to star in revamped reboot of the 'Spider-Man' movie. Earlier, it was announced that Tomei has signed to play a regular role in the Fox television drama 'Empire.'

Quoting a report in Variety, IB Times stated that insiders tipped off the publication regarding contract negotiations between Tomei and Sony about a fortnight back. Tomei is slated to portray the character of Peter Parker's guardian Aunt May, who is left widowed in the first movie. In the previous two iterations of 'Spider-Man,' Rosemary Harris and Sally Field portrayed the character.

In fact, 50-year-old Tomei would be the youngest actress to play Aunt May in the 'Spider-Man' tale. This seems to be very appropriate as the studio opted for the youngest 'Spider-Man' cast ever, Tom Holland, who, at the age of 19, will be taking on the main role first portrayed by Tobey Maguire and fellow Brit Andrew Garfield. Jon Watt, who directed 'Cop Car' earlier, will helm the upcoming movie.

Recently, Tomei announced that she will be joining the cast of 'Empire' Season 2, wherein the Academy Award winner actress will portray Mimi Whiteman, a lesbian billionaire with an ear for hip-hop. It is expected that Whiteman will not only bring the cash, but also contribute to the drama of the hit Fox series.

Tomei joins an ever increasing roster of 'Empire' guest stars, which also has Chris Rock, Lenny Kravitz and Oprah. While her reoccurring financial role will make her a potential rival for Lyon family matriarch Cookie, Tomei will be joining 'Magic Mike XXL' star Adam Rodriguez as a newcomer with an extended story line.

The new 'Spider-Man' movie is scheduled to hit the theaters in 2017. Meanwhile, fans can catch Tomei in 'Empire' when Season 2, which premieres at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox on Sept. 23.
