'Annabelle' Movie Reviews, Spoilers: 'The Conjuring' Spin-Off Comes Full Circle with Return of Evil Doll
'Annabelle', the prequel to the hit horror movie 'The Conjuring', reveals the story of how an innocent looking doll turned out to be sinister. The film is basically a blend of 'Rosemary's Baby', 'The Conjuring' and 'Insidious', and tells the story of a wicked doll's demonic possession.
However, some found the delivery of that story, somewhat uninspiring and lengthy.
The film opens with a pregnant Mia (Annabelle Wallis) receiving the Annabelle doll from her husband John (Ward Horton), who is a physician. The Annabelle doll is identical to the one she had when she was a child, and it makes the collection for her baby's room rather extensive.
Initially, the doll is not haunted, but it becomes possessed after two cult members burgle their home one night. The robbery turns sour, as a male cult member stabs Mia in the stomach, while the female member commits suicide holding the Annabelle doll in her arms. A drop of her blood falls on the doll, possessing it as a result.
The demon connected to the doll desires the soul of Mia and John's baby, Leah, and is determined to haunt the family until it gets its sacrifice.
While Annabelle does not move at all, the movie is filled with frightening noises, gusts of wind, shady halls as well as a black demons that startle viewers occasionally.
Meanwhile, Mia makes friends with two people in the film. The first is a priest whom she visits for guidance, and the other person is Evelyn, the owner of a small bookstore, who helps Mia find out to which cult the people who broke into her house belonged to.
They broke into Mia and John's house as they were trying to invoke a demon. In fact, Mia is the only person who sees the demon that hides itself inside the doll.
Evelyn tells Mia that her daughter Ruby died in a car accident while she was driving. She also shows Mia a scar on her wrist from a self-inflicted wound following Ruby's death. Evelyn tells Mia that it wasn't Ruby's time to die and that she heard Ruby say that she still had work to do on Earth.
Towards the end of the movie, Mia gets locked into her apartment with the demon, while Leah goes missing, but the audience can hear her cries. Mia has a breakdown when she realizes that she has to sacrifice herself to save Leah.
Grabbing Annabelle, Mia stands on the window's ledge in Leah's room, just about to jump. In the meantime, Evelyn and John make their way into the apartment and save Mia before she kills herself. While she wanders about trying to save her baby, Evelyn gets on the ledge with Annabelle and eventually sacrifices herself.
The movie finishes, coming full circle, with the doll Annabelle being placed in a store and a woman coming in to purchase it for her daughter. This woman happens to be one of the two nurses at the beginning of the film.
IMDb gave the film a 6.1/10, while Metacritic gave it 38%, following 26 reviews.
