Mediocrity is far from the vibe you will get from The Afters’ sophomore release, Never Going to OK. The intro track “The Secret Parade”, hints of to the wave of movement in the body of Christ and lets everyone know “Don’t try to loose us cause that’s right where you’ll find us”. Who would want to, since The Afters offer a vibrantly colorful album in both the lyrics and chords? Never Going Back to OK gets the job done!
The overall quality and creativity in their rock/pop sound is a delight to hear. Songs include “Tonight”, a declaration of putting things behind and embracing tomorrow, tonight, and “Beautiful Words”, which reminds us how our unique story is waiting to be written. The chorus of one of my favorites, “Falling into Place”, speaks of God’s redemptive grace, “ I was on the edge of a distance world, a shattered life with no where left to turn, till I saw you there and everything I thought had come to waste was falling into place.”
I was however quite disappointed by “My Space Girl”, which talks about a crush with a girl on-line. It lands in the middle of the collection, and really threw me off. It’s really not needed and seems compromising next to the others. Still the group quickly recovers with “We Are The Sound”, an anthem that gets the motivation back and the blood pumping.
The Afters truly have something profound to say to this generation. Still it’s a delightful surprise to hear their polished sound. They can truly stand up next to any other secular band in their category, all while providing a message of hope. There is a good variety to be found as each track progresses, and I doubt one would get bored listening to this album. Never Going Back to OK provides tracks great for driving to or when ever you need an uplifting boost. Quite frankly, you can tell they had fun making this one, which makes it just as much fun to listen to. Enjoy!
